Oil accumulators are the motorsports lifeline. They often save engines from damage, by providing additional oil in reserve ready to be used at any moment. Installed into the pressurized side of the oil system, the use of compressed air is forced into the oil reserve and then into the engine when the oil pressure drops below normal. When oil pressure returns to normal, that reserve oil is forced back into the accumulators, and is ready for the next emergency.
